Marangu Route


Day 01: Accommodations: Lake Duluti

Meet by your Driver Guide at JRO (Please look out for the board with your name on it) and you will be transferred to Arusha Coffee Lodge for accommodation.

Arusha Coffee Lodge situated on the entrance off the major highway that serves the northern Tanzania safari is cushioned in a coffee plantation and along side one of the best restaurants in the area Redds African Grill House.


Day 02:  Accommodations: Mandara Gate

Marangu Gate (6000ft)

Mandara Hut (9000ft)

Hiking time is 4hrs

Habitat: Montane forest

Leave the Lodge at about 0900hrs and drive to about 40minute to Marangu Gate on the eastern side of Kilimanjaro. Do the necessary paperwork at the park gate such as registrations Begin hiking at about 1030hrs.Hike through rainforest from the park gate (6000ft) to Mandara Hut 9000ft, taking about 4 hrs. Stop half way for lunch. Reach Mandara Huts at about 2 or 3 PM.A side trip to Maundi Crater (about 15minutes away is a good way to see the surroundings as well as views of Kenya and Northern Tanzania. Bathrooms are available with running water!


Day 03: Accommodations: Horombo Hut

Mandara Hut 9000ft)

Horombo Huts (12,000ft)

Hiking time 6hrs

Habitat: Heath land

Wake to breakfast (approx. 7:30am) and pack for the next leg. Break camp at about 8:30am and hike to Horombo Huts 12000ft. This leg should take 5 to 6 hrs. You travel through lower heath land with small shrubs being the main vegetation. Stop half way for lunch. Views of Mawenzi are amazing.The summit of Kibo can be seen from Horombo Huts. Arrive Horombo Huts at about 3 pm Rest, unpack and prepare for dinner.


Day 04: Accommodations: Kibo Hut

Horombo Hut (12000ft) Kibo Huts (15500ft)

Hiking time: 7hrs

Habitat: Alpine Desert

Wake to breakfast as usual ( if you wake before sunup you can get some great photos of the sunrise)Pack and begin the hike to Kibo  Huts ( 15500ft).The first half of the days hike traverses  the upper heath land while the second half crosses the vast saddle that connect Mawenzi and Kibo. The saddle is an alpine desert that resembles a lunar landscape.  Be careful to notice signs of altitude sickness .The days hike should take 6to 7 hrs, stopping half way for Lunch. No running water at Kibo Huts.


Day 05: Accommodations: Horombo Hut

Wake around midnight to a light breakfast, and then prepare for the summit accent.

This part of the hike is carried out during the early morning before down so that the climbers reach Uhuru peak at around sunrise. Leave at about 1:00am and reach Gilman’s point at about 7:00am.The Climbers are met with views of the crater from Gilmans point because its is on the Crater Rim. Another 2 hrs of hiking brings the climber to Uhuru Peak ( 19,340ft) at about 830am.From there you will descend back to Kibo Huts, collect your things and cross the saddle  again at Horombo Huts  where you will  spend the night Eat dinner and get some well – deserved sleep.


Day 06: Accommodations: Horombo Hut

Ascent – Descent

We are awakened about midnight, and have tea and cookies. The guides try to get everyone ready to climb as quickly as possible, leaving between 1:00 – 1:30am starting off, the trail swings back and forth up a steep screen slope and the climate is bitterly cold. The summit climb is an event you will not forget, with the night sky full of stars and only you’re breathing to help focus your mind.

Most climbers arrive at Gilman’s point elevation 18,635 ft in time to enjoy sunrise around 6:30am.The views from the top looking down on the plains of Africa make it all worthwhile. Some climbers decide that they have reached their goal and head down from here. For the strong, the true summit is Uhuru Peak (19,340feet) – an additional 3 hrs away round trip. The descent from Gilman’s point is fairy rapid; taking about 2 hrs most climbers take a short rest at Kibo Hut before descending to Horombo Hut for the night, arriving in the late afternoon. Overnight: Horombo Hut.


Day 07:

Accommodations: Arusha Coffee Lodge                             

A long 14mile hike back to the Marangu gate and park’s headquarters. After finishing your climb you will be taken to Arusha Coffee Lodge for Dinner and overnight.


Day 08:

Breakfast, day at leisure, Transfer for shopping thereafter lunch transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your outbound flight.                        



Machame Route

Day 01: Accommodations: Lake Duluti

Arusha Coffee Lodge was inspired by the grace and romance of a fine 'old-time' coffee plantation where guests could anticipate an accommodations of the highest standard.


Day 02:

Accommodations: Forest Camp

Elevation (m): 1800m to 3000m, Distance: 11km, Time: 5-7 hours, Habitat: Montane Forest.
Drive from the Hotel to the Mount Kilimanjaro National Park Gate. Once you reach the park gate, you will sign in at the Park office and make your final preparations to start the climb. Our path takes us through rain forest on a winding trail up a ridge to Machame Camp where we will camp overnight.


Day 03: Accommodations: Shira Camp

Elevation (m): 3000m to 3850m, Distance: 9km, Time: 4-6 hours, Habitat: Moorland.
After breakfast, we start walking, leaving the rainforest behind, and continue our ascent, crossing a small valley and up to a steep rocky ridge, covered with heath. Our route now turns west onto a river gorge. Time for rest, dinner, and overnight at the Shira campsite


Day 04: Accommodations: Baranco Camp

Elevation (m): 3850m to 4600m to 3950m, Distance: 12 km, Time: 6-7 hours, Habitat: Semi-desert.
This is a very important day for acclimatization and will help your body prepare for summit day. This will be our toughest day so far and you may start to feel the symptoms of altitude. We will ascend to Lava Tower at 4600m and take our lunch there to acclimatize. Following this we descend to spend the night at Barranco campsite. This offers great photographic opportunities of the Western Breach and Breach Wall. The camp is situated in a valley below the Breach and Great Barranco Wall, which will provide you with a memorable sunset while you wait for your dinner.


Day 05: Accommodations: Karanga Camp

Elevation (m): 3950m to 3930m, Distance: 7 km, Hiking Time: 4 hours, Habitat: Alpine Desert.
Today starts with a short, but fun, scramble, to the top of the Great Barranco Wall. We then traverse over scree to the Karanga Valley (3930m) beneath the icefalls of the Heim, Kersten and Decken Glaciers. We will stay overnight at Karanga campsite.


Day 06: Accommodations: Barafu Camp

Elevation (m): 3930m to 4600m, Distance: 6kms, Hiking Time: 3 hours, Habitat: Alpine Desert
we leave Karanga campsite behind to meet the junction connecting with the Mweka descent Trail. From here we continue up to the Barafu Hut. You have now completed the Southern Circuit, which offers views of the summit from many different angles. At camp, we can rest, enjoy dinner, and prepare for the summit day. The two peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo are to be clearly seen from this position


Day 07: Accommodations: Mweka Camp

Elevation (m): 4600m to 5895m (and down to 3100m) , Distance: 7km ascent / 23km descent , Time:6- 8 hours ascent / 7-8 hours descent, Habitat: Stone screed and ice-capped summit.
You will be woken at 23:30 with some quick tea and biscuits. We start our trek to the summit between the Rebman and Ratzel glaciers. We will head in a north-westerly direction and ascend through heavy scree towards Stella Point on the crater rim. This is the most mentally and physically challenging part of the trek. At Stella Point (5732m), we will stop for a short rest and will be rewarded with the most magnificent sunrise you are ever likely to see (weather permitting). At Uhuru Peak (5895m), we will have reached the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the continent of Africa. It can be very cold at night at these elevations, but it will be quite warm by the end of the hiking day. From the summit, we descend down to the Mweka Hut camp site, via Barafu for lunch. Trekking poles will be needed for the loose gravel going down to Mweka Camp (3100m). Later in the evening, we will enjoy our last dinner on the mountain and a well-earned sleep.


Day 08: Accommodations: Arusha Coffee Lodge

Elevation (m): 3100m to 1800m, Distance: 8 km, Time: 3-4 hours, Habitat: Montane Forest.
We depart after breakfast descending down to the Mweka Park Gate to receive your summit certificates. At lower elevations, it can be wet and muddy. Gaiters and trekking poles will help. Shorts and t-shirts will be suitable (keep rain gear and warmer clothing handy).

Day 09:

Breakfast, Day at leisure then transfer for shopping, then transfer to the Airport for departure. Or you can do Safari Optional activities: Get a flight to Serengeti for Big Five Wildlife Experience.
